Just what I needed 🙏
as a drummer, I technically understood little, but I can still appreciate the further beauty you have given to this already beautiful tune!
Oh thank you! Thanks for dropping by
Oh I love that tritone sub you rejected! I think in modal contexts getting functional with it for a brief moment can be rly shocking
Haha thank you! I’m glad someone agrees 😃
Awesome video and great arrangement! I love how you think about texture, lots to learn from!
Amazing job!
You did an amazing job! 😀 RUclips thought you were Wayne Shorter
Hello! I love all your analysis! Where did you find all those scores from Gil? Or, where did you find big band and small ensemble charts/reduction in general?
A lot of the scores are from Ejazzlines and other publishers. I made the reductions myself. I’ve spent many an hour inputting notes in my life! 😅
@@gilevansinsideout Thank you! Since I am still a student, Ejazzlines are still quite unaffordable for me, are there any cheaper platforms where you can get scores? Thank you once again in advance!
Oh, I hear ya. Transcribing is a tonne of work, but pays off well. Even just doing a short bit can be quite enlightening.
w video and arrangement
4:13 you dont consider it an open voicing when only the bass part is "open", thats still called closed
Ok cool
beauty
Okay, sorry, this is my first time here. Nice video Alex!
Hi Gil, nice video! I'm not even a musician, but this is still very interesting - and it's an engaging way of demonstrating the work of an arranger. I literally know more about quantum theory than music theory, but I digress. Watching Rick Beato's videos, I get lost within a few seconds of any music theory instruction he provides. I often query ChatGPT about music (in general) and sometimes for specific tunes. At some point it will be able to go online and listen to the piece in question and tell me if I've got it wrong or if I'm able to articulate what's going on musically in layman's terms. I gave the AI a description of a song, "Choro Das Aquas" by Ivan Lins, arranged by Joan Monné for the Sant Andreu Jazz Band hoping that it could enlighten me a bit. The original is very interesting, but the arrangement by Monné uses a great deal more dissonance and to great effect. I was also struck by the fact that Monné apparently wrote the arrangement specifically for a woman (he's worked with Carme before) with the point of view of a woman. The tempo was slowed just a bit and the dynamic range of the arrangement seems to be greater than the original. This provides space for greater introspection and instead of being plaintive, seems to be asking, "How did I get this so wrong?" This works perfectly for a female protagonists. ChatGPT couldn't actually comment on my observations, which is too bad. I think before long it will be able to answer my questions in a manner you or Rick might. In any case, I love that good content is available on YT - hopefully this type of video will not be displaced by torrents garbage content.
Thanks for your nice comment. That is a very apt description of what a good arrangement can do! Yes I think you are better to ask musician rather than Chat GPT at this stage :D. Thanks for mentioning that piece. I've never heard it before. It's very beautiful.
@@gilevansinsideout I'm glad you liked it. The first four or five times I listened to it I didn't like it, but then it kept popping into my head. I had to kind of study it and fell in love with the arrangement.
That’s usually how the best things are 😃 as I’m sure you’re aware having studied advanced physics
@@gilevansinsideout Yes indeed - I haven't studied advanced physics, just read some books on the subject. Your arrangement of "Infant Eyes" made me think of the SAJB and Joan Monné because they do covers of very old music and always make it sound new and reanimated. The did a cover of the duet version of ÀGUAS DE MARÇO (Tom Jobim) with a little bump in the tempo and 13 instruments. One of the vocalists is Alba Armengou, she was 15 when they recorded that song.
Wow, thank you. I’ll make sure to have a listen. If you really like the art of Arranging, Gil Evans has so many good examples. If you like jazz arrangements of classical tunes, Gil has done a few of those. Or try My Ship from miles ahead and compare that to the original
This is excellent!
What a wonderful arrangement! Well done!!
Thanks 😊
Such valuable content. Thank you.
Nice but I think original is slower, why change temp?
Yeah it is. Mine is at bpm 66. I think this tempo makes the ensemble passages a little easier, and helps them to flow
Beautiful! Great choices that really compliment the tune. The re-voiced figure at m22 that goes above the melody is a real pro touch that sounds great.
Oh thanks Tom! 😃
A very beautiful arrangement, Alex. Wonderful variations in the accompaniment, first longer notes and later more lively movements. Arrangements like yours reflect the music I love most. Thank you. A great shout out for the musicians, too, in particular Patricio. What a great tone and phrasing!
Many thanks! 😃
You can't put it any better, Peter! And Patricio once again is the master instrumentalist to play that high level stuff!
wait, the arrangement you showed was the original version?
No, it’s my arrangement. I think @pattriciobottcher was just playing so nicely, YT thought it was the original for a bit
Great! ❤
Thanks! 😄
So tasteful
beautiful ! thanks for taking the time to explain your process, super interesting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
beautiful arrangment and great explanation. thanks!
You're very welcome!
i haven't watched the video yet but this is one of my fav tunes! rip wayne edit: loved it, as always
Legend!
your feelings are irrational
beautiful work and so well explained
Thank you 😃
Gorgeous! That inner line in the third phrase sounds to me like it's begging for French Horn.
Oh yes, that’s a great idea 💡
Interesting! I was liking the use of the bass clarinet and always like more instrumentation, not less. The use of a (French) Horn would be a great addition - I always want to hear that instrument! I like the idea of adding strings too.
Lovely arrangement, Alex 👍
Thanks for playing Marius 😃
Great work, Alex - as always!

Oh thank you. Nice epic arrangement!
neely :3 shorter :) gil :D
french horn and flute kind of made an imaginary oboe
Oh yeah, I like that 😃
Hey Alex, are these examples with real instruments or vst? Also, are these mixed (volume) or raw? Thank you for the videos about one of the coolest music ever made.
hola Ronaldo, these are real instruments! I have been building a collection of recorded instruments on this example, which you’ll see in a lot of my orchestration videos. I do adjust the volumes as they are recorded separately, but I try and keep the blend realistic where possible
Which song is this little excerpt from? I notice you use it a lot and it sounds nice.
Hey there, it’s mostly ‘Moon and Sand’, but I adapted it for these examples. I wanted a melody that would show off the timbre and cover a decent Range
@@gilevansinsideout Thank you
Very nice arrangement! You gave this standard tune a wonderful new vibe, Alex. Thank you for your detailed explanations how you did it.
Thank you 😃
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Love that D6/C# ! Can't get enough of these minor 9ths :-)
Thanks Johannes. I’m glad you enjoy them 😃
Thanks 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Very nice. 👍
man i dont usually comment in these videos, but i was recently in a jazz workshop and i had to play a charlie parker blues with a 6 horn ensemble, so I arranged it with your rules and stuff, and then some players played their lines wrong and the teacher blamed it on me having made a bad arrangement but, regardless, i liked the sound of it. that was my first sorta kinda arrangement for hopefully more to come. thanks!
Oh thats cool, glad you liked the sound of it! Did you manage to record/video it? Bummer the teacher blamed you, that's crap.
@@gilevansinsideout sadly no. i just wanted to try some of those techniques out since the ensemble reminded me of birth of the cool, but i look forward to make some more complex arrangements. your channel is really helpful, i hadn't seen that method of arranging with a new chord for every melody note. i was kind of tired of the sixth diminished chords method, so this channel was like an eye opener
I’m glad you’re enjoying 😃
soooo gooooddd
the challenge is getting it in tune LOL
true!
Thanks for this valuable insight into the use of the oboe in jazz orchestrations. Sketches of Spain has magical sounds from the pen of Gil Evans.
You are welcome!
very nice analysis.
Can you make a video on the different (more strange or atypical) instruments Gil wrote for? And how we can write for these new textures?
Hey there! Yeah I could do, what sort of angle do you mean? As I’ve done write a few orchestration videos already. Check those out and let me know if they don’t cover what you need
i knew it was the rite of spring by the thumbnail
haha, well done!
Hi! I have a question about this. If you were to arange this for a big band would you give the rhythm section the changes that we had at the start (just 1 per bar) or would you give them the changes that change almost every beat (due to you reharmonization). Thanks!
Hey there, I guess I have to make a vid about the rhythm section and this technique as quite a few people have asked that question! As you probably know, in thick big band passages its typical for the pno./gtr. not to play. You can frequently hear the Count and Duke playing little piano melodies between louder ensemble passages. If the guitar is playing each beat like freddie green style, then yes it would probably have a new chord for each beat. If the lowest horn is low, then the walking bass follows a similar melody. If the lowest horn goes higher in its range, then a more typical walking bass can be written (chord symbols). I don't mind having the pno. or gtr. sitting out for parts of an arrangement. It can give you greater contrast when they come back in. And its unlikely that you'll have a thick texture like this for a whole chart anyway. I hope that helps!
@@gilevansinsideout Thanks! That helps yes. Thank you for the anwser
This is great! I was waiting for that Ab in the last chord for so long until you finally changed it, literally shouted out loud with joy!
Haha great 😊 glad you liked it
Hello!great video ,thank you very much!, I'm very interested, what's the theory for the upright bass, I know how to write walking basslines, but I'm always confused about the relationship with the lowest horn, should I follow it or just pay attention to the basic harmony,I tried to analyze the relationship, but I couldn't find any specific rules, thanks for the answer
Hello, thanks for your question. The bass generally follows the lowest horn. Sometimes the lowest horn goes higher in its range, and acts more like a part than a bassline. When this happens I let the bass player improvise or write in a different bass line outlining the harmony as usual
@@gilevansinsideout i see ,got it ,thank you for your fast reply ,it helped a lot!
bass clarinet here ;D
Great concept! Thanks for sharing.
for some reason this tutorial is kind of calming and satisfying. mabye its seeing the process behind these rich harmizations and then seeing the final outcome but its a tutorial i can actually pay attention to in full. great video!
Oh that’s nice to hear. There’s plenty of others like it on my channel 😃
